For Registered Nutritional Therapists and Registered Dieticians who are looking for a program that clients can work through in parallel to their Nutritional Rehabilitation Therapy, to address the emotional eating component of Bulimia or Binge Eating Disorder. If you know that your client is not attending a Counsellor/Psychotherapist for emotional support, this program is a valuable additional resource to offer to them alongside your nutritional rehabilitation work with them.
Please also feel free to download the PDF Client Hand Out below, which you are free to give to your clients. The PDF explains the program in detail, and offers a 25% discount code for the program.
ABOUT THE PROGRAM
Eating Disorder Recovery offers several key resources for any adult, male or female, struggling with Binge Eating Disorder or Bulimia. It is not suitable for Anorexia clients.
Our Award Winning Online Program is a 12 week, online, CBT based program for Bulimia and Binge Eating sufferers. The program is self-directed, with users given clear instructions on how to log in, access and follow the sequence of sessions over a 12-week period.
The sessions themselves are pre-recorded videos, each with at least one accompanying downloadable written exercise. You can see a full session by signing up for the Free Trial, available on the “For Professionals” page of our website. Sessions consist of three main visual segments, plus the accompanying download exercise that is usually completed within the session time – using writing as a therapeutic tool.
Segment 1: Psychotherapist sets the scene for the session, outlining the concept or strategy to be covered;
Activity 1: User downloads the written or experiential exercise and completes same by pausing the video;
Segment 2: On returning to view, the video shows a ‘Simulated Therapy Group’, where the Psychotherapist is shown sitting with a group of clients, each of whom represent a common type of client struggling with an Eating Disorder. The group are actors, but their dialogue and ‘back stories’ are based entirely on real clients and their real experiences or life stories, making the content highly engaging, interactive and easy to relate to for users.
Segment 3: The Psychotherapist summarises, offers suggestions for users to try during the week, and closes.
SOME ADDITIONAL INFORMATION FOR NUTRITIONAL THERAPISTS AND DIETICIANS WORKING WITH EATING DISORDER CLIENTS.
Clients with Bulimia and Binge Eating Disorder are obviously very focused on food, weight and body image.
Clients are rule driven, so any food plans or diets are challenges and can inadvertently contribute to the client’s sense of personal failure, due to the ongoing bingeing behaviour which will not stop for some time over the course of treatment.
Open and unrestricted food plans WITHOUT CALORIE COUNTING such as Intuitive Eating, are sometimes more helpful. Breaking unhelpful food rules and debunking food myths that the client has internalised is also important. For example - Carbohydrates are bad, or all sugar should be excluded.
In the early stages, clients with Eating Disorders need to be given very small, realistic and achievable goals. Many clients do not cook or enjoy shopping for or eating ‘natural’ food. Packages are preferred because they quantify calories, sugar, fat content, etc. It can be unrealistic therefore to hand out pages of recipes or menu suggestions, as it is often the case that the client cannot cook, or may be almost phobic about cooking or handling fresh food.
In counselling, we use the metaphor of ‘teaspoons’ – clients need to work on changing, a teaspoon at a time. They may only be able to add a nutritionally dense breakfast to their day to start off with, along with one or two supplements to rehabilitate their gut. This work is slow and challenging for the practitioner! Please feel free to contact me if I can help you in developing your understanding of this client population.
A very helpful guideline is to work with the client to change Just One Thing – for example, eating a breakfast, or introducing protein into their breakfast. Or it might be having a proper dinner, which would require working on the planning for that – decision making (what recipes / dishes will work for them), shopping, preparation - will they cook in bulk and freeze/chill, do they have time to cook a meal from scratch after work? The key is to pick ‘Just One Thing’ and focus on that change alone to start off with.
The program costs just €79 to users for the full 12 weeks, and there is a discount code for 25% off in the attached PDF Information Sheet.
Goal Setting, Foods & Moods, and Legalising Foods are three of the 12 sessions directly associated with food and may be helpful for you as a practitioner to ‘get inside the mind’ of an ED client. We recommend practitioners to also purchase the program and review the content ahead of recommending it to clients. Feel free to use the discount code – NT2016 – to avail of the 25% discount yourself.
You can also register on the website and access one full session for free, which is session 2, Goal Setting. And this session should be very helpful for you in terms of helping clients to set realistic, achievable food goals, one at a time.
Please find below the printable hand out for your clients which explains the program and offers the 25% discount code to them for purchase.
